Salvage of the Polar Mist (2009)

The Polar Mist was abandoned by its crew in a storm and sank earlier this year, with nine tons of gold and silver aboard worth more than 16 million dollars.

The Polar Mist sank on the 16th of January 2009. During a heavy storm the ship and its cargo sank approximately 40 miles south-east of Rio Gallegos, Patagonia, Argentina. It came to rest 80 meters below the surface, upright and with relatively little damage to the holds.

The wreck of the Polar Mist was located and inspected using side-scan sonar and our Seaeye Tiger ROV.

After the wreck investigation, we’ve cut the chains of the manholes. The cargo was recovered by a team of saturation divers and the deck crane of the DSV C-Sailor.

The cargo was then brought onshore in Punta Quilla, Argentina and returned to the owners.
