Mattress Installation (2011)

Bluestream ROV B.V. have safely completed and executed the maiden project of the new Cougar XT for Bourbon Offshore DNT SRL in the Mediterranean Sea.

The new Cougar XT has been utilized to perform mattress installation from cable laying vessel Giulio Verne. In total 188 mattresses were laid North of the Straight of Messina and offshore Porto Torres (Sardinia), with only the Cougar XT handling the mattress installation frame.  The project was part of the main workscope for the end client Prysmian. Prysmian had been awarded the development of the new Extra High Voltage submarine power link between Sicily and the Italian mainland, an interconnection of strategic importance for the development of the entire Italian power grid. The Prysmian contract involves engineering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of two 380 kV alternate current cable circuits between the Villafranca Tirrena (Sicily) and Scilla (Calabria) power stations.. The total power transmission capacity of the link will be 2,000 MW and will enhance the current 380 kV alternate current 1,000 MW link that already connects the power grids of Sicily and Calabria across the Strait of Messina, which was installed in 1984.
